On Saturday, January 16, 2010 Hathaway-Sycamores’ Board Member Todd Doney of CB Richard Ellis hosted the Fifth Annual Battle of the Bowl, a flag football game at the Rose Bowl.
Participants range from 25 to 55 years old, and this year’s players were no strangers to the Rose Bowl field. Headlining this year’s game are several former Pac-10 college and NFL quarterbacks including Brendan McCracken (UCLA), Cory Paus (UCLA), Pat Barnes (Cal & NFL-Kansas City Chiefs), Cade McNown (UCLA & NFL-Chicago Bears) and Chris Rising (Duke linebacker) and Rob Myers (Washington State punter). UCLA Coach Rick Neuheisel was present mixing with many former Bruins. The flag football competition pit the “Benefactors” (in white) against the “Patrons,” (in red) with the two teams battling it out to raise over $30,000 for this year’s event. In game action, the Patrons jumped out to a 28-6 halftime lead led by quarterbacks Cory Paus and Brendan McCracken with Todd Doney scoring one of the first half touchdowns. The Benefactors roared back to take a 33-28 lead late in the second half fueled by QB Pat Barnes and receiver Andrew McDonald. The Patrons put together one final drive led by Paus resulting in a leaping touchdown reception by Cade McNown. Final score was Patrons 34 – Benefactors 33. We thank Todd Doney and all the players who took to the field to raise money to support the programs and services at Hathaway-Sycamores.
