'Shot-at-a-Million' Golf Classic

While no one walked away with a million bucks after sinking a hole-in-one, participants in Hathaway-Sycamores Child and Family Services' recent “Shot-at-a-Million” Golf Classic made a meaningful difference for children in need by raising over $175,000.

This years’ “Shot-at-a-Million” Golf Classic, at the Angeles National Golf Club for the first time, was as promised, better than ever. As in years past, golfers had the option of playing all day in the golf-a-thon format raising funds for the programs and services of Hathaway-Sycamores based on how many holes they play. Newly added this year was the 9-Hole Team Challenge presented by The Montage Laguna Beach for golfers just interested in playing in the afternoon. The event, co-chaired by Hathaway-Sycamores’ board members Dave Battaglia and Brad Freer, saw some 100 golfers hitting the greens. Charlie Kenny and David Plenn were the first place winners on the front nine with a score of 33 and Brent Brockermeyer and Eddie Antonini took top place honors on the back nine with a sizzling score
of 29.

Commander Chuck Street from KIIS-FM and KTLA Channel 5 was the Master of Ceremonies of the 19th Hole After-Party. The party was attended by 200 Hathaway-Sycamores’ supporters who enjoyed an evening of refreshments, raffles, the opportunity to take a “Shot-at-a-Million” and a silent auction. Ten golfers qualified to take a swing at a hole-in-one and instantly become a millionaire, but no one made the improbable shot.  The most-coveted-raffle prize—a 2010 BMW MINI Cooper—was won by Hathaway-Sycamores’ board member Scott Monroe, whose daughter turned 16 the day after the raffle. Congratulations to Scott and his daughter! Christine Donahue was the winner of dinner for two at Pinot Provence.

Hathaway-Sycamores’ President and CEO William Martone thanked everyone in attendance and applauded their “generous support of Hathaway-Sycamores’ efforts to help children, adolescents, and young adults—most of whom have suffered unimaginable trauma—rebuild their lives and become productive citizens.”

Following Martone’s remarks, Brad Freer was presented with the Travelling Trophy, a prize awarded to the golfer or team that raises the most money. Brad’s pledges and sponsorships brought in close to $60,000 which put him at the top of the proceeds list.

The program was then turned over to Shaquenta Dorothy McDonald who spoke to those on hand, explaining how Hathaway-Sycamores has had a life-changing impact on her. Shaquenta’s story brought home first-hand the importance of the work Hathaway-Sycamores does. Click here to read about McDonald's story.

Thank you to all of the golfers, sponsors and guests, your support enables us to continue doing the important work of helping children and families heal, to gain hope and thrive in life.
